Prevention Q&A

by Barry Sporer, DMD, PC

What preventive care services does Dr. Sporer provide?

Dr. Sporer is skilled in a comprehensive array of preventive care options, including routine examinations, dental cleanings, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, root planing and scaling for gum disease, dental x-rays to identify issues in their earliest and most treatable stages, and guidance in the proper techniques for brushing and flossing so patients can help maintain good oral health between office visits.

What happens during a routine office visit?

You'll need to update your dental and medical history so Dr. Sporer understands your specific risk factors. Next, you'll be asked about any problems or issues you may be experiencing. The hygienist will clean your teeth, checking for signs of gum disease or any other issues that might need additional attention. The hygienist will also discuss whether you need to change your brushing or flossing habits based on the amount of plaque and tartar found during the cleaning. Dr. Sporer will examine your teeth and gums and may take x-rays to look for signs of decay or other issues inside your teeth and jaw. He'll also perform a simple oral cancer screening using a special light and check all your restorations, like fillings and crowns, to ensure they're in good shape. Based on the results of your exam, Dr. Sporer will be able to make recommendations for future treatment to prevent any issues from becoming more serious.

Why are fluoride treatments important?

Fluoride treatments are important for strengthening the tooth enamel, the hard outer shell that protects your teeth. Applied on a regular basis, fluoride helps prevent damage from starchy or acidic foods. It can also help reverse tooth decay in its earliest stages. Although fluoride is especially important in treating teeth of children and adolescents, it can help protect teeth in adults as well.
