Dr. Sporer’s Journey to Jamaica: Giving the Gift of a Healthy Smile

At 80 Park Avenue Dental, we spend most of our days caring for patients right here in Manhattan. But every so often, that same commitment to care takes us further from home. Dr. Barry Sporer recently joined a team of volunteer dentists on an MB2 Dental-affiliated mission trip to Jamaica, providing free dental care to members of local communities who don’t have regular access to a dentist.

A Clinic Out of a Chapel

When the team arrived, there were no dental chairs waiting, no fully equipped operatories, just an empty chapel and a lot of determination. Volunteers rolled in portable treatment chairs, set up sterilization stations, and turned the space into a working dental clinic almost overnight.

It’s a far cry from a typical day at our Park Avenue office, but the mission was the same: help as many patients as possible, and treat every one of them with the same care and respect they’d receive in any dental chair, anywhere in the world.

Meeting Patients Where They Are

Throughout the trip, Dr. Sporer worked chairside, treating patients for everything from routine cleanings to more urgent dental issues that had gone unaddressed for far too long. For many patients, this was their first dental visit in years, sometimes ever.

The team also partnered with Jamaica’s Ministry of Health to share public health resources with patients, including materials on preventing dengue fever, a reminder that these mission trips are about more than just teeth. They’re about supporting the overall health and wellbeing of the community.

Why This Work Matters

Access to dental care is something many of us take for granted. But for communities without a nearby dentist, or without the means to pay for care, even a simple toothache can turn into a much bigger problem. Mission trips like this one exist to close that gap, one patient, one smile, at a time.
